Superb views of the high Pennine Fell around the headwaters of the River Tees set the scene for this walk from Cow Green Reservoir. We see in close-up many of the rocks that make this remote and dramatic landscape so special, and a haven for the rare and interesting plants whose importance is internationally recognised. Soon our path picks up the Pennine Way National Trail and stays with it until we enter a narrow gorge. At times the riverside path is strewn with boulders, and both balance and some nimble footwork are required. Finally we hear the dramatic roar of Cauldron Snout, where the river Tees flows over the Great Whin Sill, and then, it comes into view. An exciting, short scramble up the side of the waterfall takes us back to Cow Green, but great care is needed and importantly a head for heights.
This walk is suitable for anyone staying in Haltwhistle without a car; a coach leaves and returns to Haltwhistle Market Place.
