Making A Difference

RSPB GeltsdaleMany of you will have seen David Attenborough’s new series, Wild Isles, which focuses on the stunning wildlife to be found in the British Isles. He also made an impassioned plea for us all to do more to halt the decline in numbers of our native species.

Following on from this programme, our local BBC Look North, broadcasted an item on the work being carried out at the Geltsdale Nature Reserve, managed by the RSPB. They are making a huge difference by “rewilding a remote and ruggedly beautiful corner of the North Pennines”.

By coincidence, this is where our Festival Walk, Cumbria Rocks begins! Join us to explore this little known part of Cumbria and learn more about the quarrying which took place here over the centuries which helped create the landscape we see today.

To find out more about the work being done at the Nature Reserve, check out their website:th

The YHA

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

YHA LogoIf your idea of a stay in a Youth Hostel is of an uncomfy bunk in a dilapidated hut, just check out the YHA accommodation at The Sill! (https://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/yha-the-sill-at-hadrians-wall).
There are 4 more hostels in Northumberland and others in various locations around the UK, all offering a range of accommodation. A great way to experience a different area of the country, particularly if you are on a budget.
The YHA Festival of Walking (https://www.yha.org.uk/festival-of-walking/social-walks) aims to offer a “supported and safe place to get involved with walking, meet other walkers and build confidence walking in rural locations.”
This reflects the goals HWF had in mind when it began all those years ago and continues to promote. We are delighted to support this YHA initiative as we work together to make walking accessible to as many people as possible.

Check out what the YHA has on offer and don’t forget our walks around Allendale and Haltwhistle on 1st and 2nd October.
