Walk 4:  The Follies of Hartburn and Rothley                        Sunday 23rd April 2023

This is a figure- of- 8 route which explores the beautiful countryside to the west of Morpeth. From the village of Hartburn, this walk descends through some charming woods to reach a curious, hidden construction from the 18th Century. After crossing fields and woodland, we then climb to reach Rothley Castle, an 18th century gothic folly built in the style of a mediaeval castle. From here, we can enjoy commanding views of the surrounding countryside,  including  Wallington Hall. Then, turning south, we walk over crags and through meadows to arrive at the village of Middleton before following quiet lanes and fields to return to our starting point.
