From the village, we walk towards the ruins of Thirlwall Castle and pick up the Hadrian’s Wall Path to reach Walltown Crags. We find some of the best preserved stretches of The Wall here and it is also the site of Milecastle 45. There are some magnificent views from this vantage point. We stay with the Hadrian’s Wall Path as it undulates and winds its way along the ridge until we reach Great Chesters Farm. This is the site of Aesica Fort. The remnants of a strong room and a shrine are still visible. We now follow the course of the vallum. After reaching Lowtown, we cross the ancient Stanegate before following the road back to Greenhead.
