Walk 12:  Around The Wall                                                      Wednesday 26th April 2023

This walk is accessible for those staying in Haltwhistle without a car as it begins and ends in the Market Place.

By train to Haltwhistle:(www.northernrailway.co.uk)

By bus to Haltwhistle: (www.stagecoachbus.com)

From the Market Place, we walk alongside the pretty Haltwhistle Burn.  It is difficult to imagine this quiet gorge was once bustling with industrial activity. We climb very gradually to pass the remains of Aesica Roman Fort.  From here we pick up the Hadrian’s Wall Path for a short distance before making our way through Cleughfoot Farm. It’s always clarty (muddy) here! From here, it’s on to pass Milecastle 41 then descend to the Vallum. We cross the lovely Cranberry Brow and open moorland  before working our way downhill to meet the Haltwhistle Burn once more. From here it is just a short distance to return to the Market Place.

Distance:  Approx 10.5 miles          Grade: 3, Energetic          Ascent/Descent: Approx 1180 feet
