Walk 22: Steer Me to the Crags                                               Saturday 29th April 2023

We begin by walking over open farmland and to the Middleton Burn. We then cross the Devil’s Causeway, the course of an old Roman Road, to reach Bolam Lake.  The lake and woodlands were originally laid out on behalf of the Rev John Beresford, owner of Bolam Estate, who wanted to provide work for the local people. We move on through farmland before heading towards Shaftoe Hall, a working farm. From here, we climb to Shaftoe Crags. These are huge stones, stacked precariously on top of each other. We pass a marker stone commemorating Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887 and continue to Long Byers before making our way downhill to return to Middleton.
