Walk 25: Irthing Valley Circular Sunday 30th 2023
This walk takes us through the spectacular Irthing Valley in Cumbria. The valley was carved out over the centuries by the River Irthing. From the village of Low Row, we follow quiet lanes before turning to pass the impressive Denton Hall with its 14th century tower. From here, we descend to cross the Carling Gill and walk through woodland to reach the River Irthing. After walking beside the river for a little while, we make the fairly steep ascent to the ridge to take in good views of the surrounding countryside and the river valley below. We follow the course of the river as it snakes its way past an old Roman Quarry and descend to cross the ford. Leaving the river behind, we rise gently, by way of a bridleway, to walk through farmland before making our return to the starting point.
