Walk 26: St Oswald’s Way – Day 5. Great Whittington to Heavenfield.   Monday

This walk is accessible for those staying in Haltwhistle without a car as it begins and ends in the Market Place.

By train to Haltwhistle:(www.northernrailway.co.uk)

By bus to Haltwhistle: (www.stagecoachbus.com)

On the final day of our long distance route, a coach will take us to our starting point in Great Whittington. We leave the village and head south to join the Hadrian’s Wall Path and pass Milecastle 41. The Path winds its way round to cross Dere Street, a former Roman Road. We walk across farmland and through a plantation before turning to climb Hangman’s Hill. The route then zigzags and undulates to our final destination of St Oswald’s Church, Heavenfield. This place is of particular significance as it said to be the spot where King Oswald (before he became St Oswald) raised a wooden cross ahead of the battle fought here in 685. A fitting end to our journey along The St Oswald’s Way. A coach will be waiting for us here to bring us back to Haltwhistle.
