Walk 27: Housesteads to Haltwhistle                                     Monday 1st May 2023

This walk is accessible for those staying in Haltwhistle without a car as it begins and ends in the Market Place.

By train to Haltwhistle: (www.northernrailway.co.uk)

By bus to Haltwhistle: (www.stagecoachbus.com)

The final walk of our Festival is a linear one so a coach will take us to the starting point at  Houseteads, home to the Roman Fort of Vercovicium. From here we climb to Housestead Crags and Cuddy’s Crags. On a clear day you should be able to see Northumberland in the north, Scotland in the northwest, Durham in the south and Cumbria in the south west. At Milecastle 38, we leave The Wall and head across open access land before re-joining the Hadrian’s Wall Path, as it undulates and winds its way across the Whin Sill, to Caw Gap. From here, we cut across open countryside, gradually descending through farmland to reach the Haltwhistle Gorge. The pretty Haltwhistle Burn guides us to the outskirts of Haltwhistle. It’s then a short distance to the Market Place. The end of our walk and the 2023 Festival!
