Today we begin to follow the trail of Isaac Holden, former miner, itinerant tea seller and philanthropist. We walk from Allendale along the East Allen river and then climb to Pry Hill, past a ruined bastle and onto the Black Way across the moors in the footsteps of former lead miners. We descend to Coalcleugh, once a thriving mining village before climbing to the Northumberland /Cumbrian border and descending to Nenthead.
This walk is suitable for anyone staying in Haltwhistle without a car; a coach leaves and returns to Haltwhistle Market Place.
