A delightful walk taking us north of Hadrian’s Wall with spectacular views along the way. Leaving Haltwhistle we walk up the beautiful Haltwhistle Burn with its reminders of our chequered industrial past. As Hadrian’s Wall comes into view we pass the sites of Roman camps and forts. Passing the former Cawfields Quarry, now a lake, we head north of the Wall and turn to view the impressive Cawfield Crag, an outcrop of the Whin Sill. We continue north towards ever wilder country, before swinging back southwards. We have a gentle climb back up on to Hadrian’s Wall from where we are rewarded with spectacular views, to the North and then the South as we reach the crest of the hill. We then follow the wall for a short way before turning across country back to Haltwhistle.
This walk is suitable for anyone staying in Haltwhistle without a car; it leaves and returns to Haltwhistle Market Place.
